After our earlier post about Guilty Pleasure songs, I got to thinking about some of mine. It's no secret for anyone who has ever been to a SHAKE RATTLE & ROLL show, that I love the one-hit wonders.
And on my list of great, one-hit wonder, 80's, guilty pleasure songs is the 1982 classic about love-amidst-the-falling-bombs, I MELT WITH YOU by Modern English. There are many things to love about this record, from it's poetic lyrics of desperation, to the spare, post-punk arrangement on the track.
But for me, what seals the deal is the drum fill coming back into the last chorus of the song. Anyone can play a drum fill right on a beat. But to play a fill that starts kinda-sorta-almost in between the beats is something altogether different.
Is it genius? Is it sloppy? Is it a drummer falling through his kit while they pressed RECORD? Take a listen for yourself. It happens right around 3:03 in the video. So sit back, relax, and let the new wave awesomeness wash over you. And by all means, let us know YOUR fave one-hit wonder.
