On the heels of the news that Marilyn Manson will be joining the cast of the final season of Sons of Anarchy, playing a white supremacist, we wanted to offer our list of the real rockers (sorry Marky Mark...) who have made the crossover to great acting (sorry, Gene Simmons...). That's right, you need BOTH to make this list.
And we're not counting rock stars who played rock stars (looking at you, Mick...) or were cast exclusively in singing roles or movie musicals.
#7 - COURTNEY LOVE
Golden Globe nominations for a role that featured her own golden globes in THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT.
#6 - DWIGHT YOAKAM
An impressive and varied resume' of dark performances. Our personal fave - the sadistic burglar of PANIC ROOM. And yes, we know Dwight is technically a country artist, but hey, he's brooding enough to make the cut. And who's gonna tell him no...you?
#5 - MEATLOAF
Yeah, yeah, yeah - he was Eddie in ROCKY HORROR. But he was also Robert Paulsen, in the movie whose first rule is, we can't talk about it, and whose second rule is...
#4 - HENRY ROLLINS
Even before Marilyn Manson gets the chance to sink his teeth into the white supremacist role awaiting him on Sons of Anarchy, remember that Henry got there first, playing a...umm...white supremacist...
#3 - STING
Somehow, in between marathon sessions of tantra, Sting has wound up in many of the quirky sci-fi pictures of the last 30 years: DUNE, THE BRIDE, and ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN.
#2 - TOM WAITS
Another rocker who chooses the sci-fi/fantasy path for the bulk of his acting work - DRACULA (as the insane Renfield), MYSTERY MEN, IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS, BOOK OF ELI, and many more.
#1 - DAVID BOWIE
The master of re-invention, Bowie's whole career has been one performance after another: Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke...but his onscreen work in THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, LABYRINTH and more cements his legacy.
