There are certain songs in rock n roll that simply cannot be played without their "companion" song that immediately follows. So entrenched in the consciousness are these pairs, that hearing one without the other often leaves listeners dissatisfied, and wanting.
Many of these dynamic duos show up on Dueling Piano Bar requests, so today, we are celebrating these heavy-hitters of rock, who prove that two great tastes can taste great together.
There are many classic double songs that just don't get played at Dueling Pianos shows, like FOREPLAY/LONGTIME by Boston, and HEARTBREAKER/LIVING LOVING MAID by Led Zeppelin, and many more that is rooted in a guitar instrumental, like ERUPTION/YOU REALLY GOT ME from Van Halen.
Here for you now is our list of the top FIVE such companion songs in Dueling Pianos.
#5 - FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND/LOVE LIES BLEEDING - Elton John
You won't hear this one that often, but it's epic. Clocking in at around eleven minutes this selection usually gets truncated, but it's Elton at his compositional best, and after the 300th version of CROCODILE ROCK, this is a welcome sorbet.
#4 - SGT PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND/WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS - The Beatles
While one could also argue for the Golden Slumbers medley, that set doesn't get requested all that much. Any song that celebrates getting stoned with your pals, though, is right at home at the Dueling Piano Bar.
#3 - LOAD OUT/STAY - Jackson Browne
A great choice for the late-night crowds, this love letter to the audience from the performer says everything that every troubadour and travelling songster has wanted to tell their appreciative crowds. And you can't beat that singalong hook at the end.
#2 - PRELUDE/ANGRY YOUNG MAN - Billy Joel
Listed as two separate compositions, though never played apart, this is universally renowned as the creme-de-la-creme of rock n roll piano playing. When players want to challenge each other, this is the song they listen for. And for the NYC Dueling Pianos shows, this Billy Joel song is a must have.
Honorable Mention goes to - FEELING THAT WAY/ANYTIME from Journey, a great pair of tunes, but sadly missing from the Dueling pianos repertoire...
And at #1 with a bullet...
WE WILL ROCK YOU/WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS - Queen
Both halves of this pair are singalong classics on their own, but put them together and you've got the sports anthem of all time. Any time a local sports team claims a victory, you can count on this awesome-twosome coming in as a request. And now with Queen on the road again fronted by Adam Lambert, these songs are definitely not going away anytime soon.
