Every piano player that I know, whether a Dueling Pianos or piano bar or cocktail player, has their own little "pre-show" mix on an ipod somewhere. That set of tunes that gets them ready for their show. Sometimes they take it to the gym, or out for a run. Sometimes it just plays in the car to get the blood going before you arrive at your show, or even backstage to psyche you up for a big show.
Every mix is different, and every song has its purpose.
On my mix, among the hair bands and dance tracks, the RENT and the Rolling Stones, you'll find ACROSS 110th STREET, by Bobby Womack. A classic groove with a socially conscious lyric, with a different take on my hometown than many NYC songs usually give.
If you don't know it - give it a listen.
Today, the soul music world lost one of its smoothest voices.
RIP Bobby Womack.
