There's a GREAT article in Slate.com, written by Mark Joseph Stern, which I could paraphrase, but it just wouldn't do justice, so I'm linking directly to it so you can read it as well.
It's about why the music of our teenage years has such a powerful effect on us, and how our attachment to that music affects us on a neurological level.
Certainly explains why I keep requesting those hair bands when I go to piano bars...
