Yesterday, the biggest rock band in the world met the biggest brand in the world as U2 pulled off the largest album release in history at the IPhone6 launch event in California.

The new record, Songs of Innocence, was immediately made available, for free, to the half a billion users of ITunes. They performed their new single, THE MIRACLE (OF JOEY RAMONE).

The free release will not count toward any album sales charts, nor Soundscan rankings.

In this era of pirated music, downloads and mass file sharing, artists are continuing to innovate the means by which their music is distributed and monetized. Jay Z, Wu Tang Clan and Beyonce' are just a few on a growing list of performers who are re-examining the old album sales model in hopes of keeping their music sales relevant in a digital world.
